Wednesday open thread.

Obsessing about Israel/Palestine right now. So, yeah.

Standard FYI clause: I generally wait about 2 hours after Ta-Nehisi would typically open a thread (roughly noon, EST, back when such a thing was typical…!), and if none is forthcoming, I put one up here.

  1. Hey, I didn’t have to even round you up!
The good news? Kevin Clash has been cleared!
Also? GoT cast a couple of Freys, we got rid of two useless non singers on The Voice, and at 2pm, the Disney Princesses will Welcome Leia into their ranks: http://anibundel.wordpress.com/

Since People and Salon have both made announcements today, so why not the Horde?

Who’s your nominee for sexiest man alive?

    • (I’d say Rob, but I’m biased. Also he desperately needs to accept his balding state and chop the queue at the back of his neck.)
So instead I guess I’ll say….Robert Downey Jr.

      • As I have stated elsewhere, if I ever start going bald I’m going to shave my head. Balding + long hair is not a good combination.

My nominees are always Taye Diggs and Taylor Kitsch from Friday Night Lights (and those movies he’s been in recently that I choose not to watch).

Though Salon makes a strong case for Chris Kluwe, and I do find it hard to argue with those pictures…

But you make a strong point yourself in regard to Mr. Kitsch. Clearly, the only acceptable answer is Kluwe *&* Kitsch, jointly accepting the award by kissing shirtless.

I swear to you, I almost left this EXACT SAME COMMENT a couple of hours ago, but got interrupted at work.

+1 on the Taye Diggs. I watched Private Practice last night but all I can remember is how dreamy he was.

Also, too: Idris Elba and Daniel Craig (I saw Skyfall today and all I could do was sigh)

  3. First post-sickness blog post! I reviewed Neisson Réserve Spéciale rhum agricole, a delightfully mature berry-fest that should appeal to lovers of sherried scotch whisky.

If you have a moment to spare a good thought or a prayer, please do so for S. Today she is scheduled to receive a donor kidney from her sister. The surgery is long and complicated and the kidney does not always “take”, so let us hope that all goes well for her and her sister.

Also spare a thought for A, whose battle ended on Monday. She was not a happy patient, but bore up under the treatment and diminishments of live as best she could. Anyway I hope she has peace now.

Me, I’m just chugging along, trying to stay on an even keel.

Blog flog: I wrote a blog post about how the Republican Party should already know what to do to appeal to Hispanics, and it isn’t likely to do it.

  6. My head is killing me. Also everyone in my office seems to have worn their moron pants today.

      Moron pants? *raises eyebrow*

      • Our CEO left town today and the tizzy this threw everyone into in beyond me. Somehow it also meant that meetings were delayed people didn’t get where they were supposed to on time, and at one point She Who Is Not My Boss forgot it was me she was talking to on the phone and started talking to me like I was the person in our foyer waiting for her.

Frank Rich’s Mittster post-mortem. His language isn’t t as colorful as Charles Pierce, but he nails it pretty good just the same.

He raised Truthiness to a level of chutzpah beyond Stephen Colbert’s fertile imagination, and on the grandest scale. That a presidential hopeful so cavalierly mendacious could get so close to the White House, winning some 48 percent of the popular vote, is no small accomplishment. The American weakness that Romney both apotheosized and exploited in achieving this feat—our post-fact syndrome where anyone on the public stage can make up anything and usually get away with it—won’t disappear with him. A slicker liar could have won, and still might.

So what’s the word on how the Chris Hayes/TNC event went last night at MIT? Or has this already been discussed to death on the Facebook? (Curse you all!) I wasn’t able to go, but I did hear they were turning people away once it got too crowded.

    • No, on FB we discussed Fallow’s trip to Fairbanks, AK and that Ian got to go on a double date with the Fallowses. He now refers to them as “Jim” and “Deborah” and everything.
But being FB, the thread then devolved when Adele was introduced (Fallows is a fan) and Sara had to get all ranty and derail things.

Trust me – much of what is discussed there is truly indigestible….no, I mean non-digestible….ack! Ya can’na summarize! Whar’s yer Wully Shakspeer nooo?

My wife and I were in line. We got turned away because it got full to capacity. If we’d gotten in line 10 minutes earlier we would have been golden 😦

Well that sucks. 😦 Too bad there couldn’t have been a guest list like there are at bars/clubs….then TNC could have reserved some spots for the Horde. The upside (I hope) is that perhaps the popularity of the event means there will be more events featuring the Khan and others.

I guess I’m glad I decided to go to class rather than skipping out to go to MIT, even though I ended up way short of sleep because I stayed late.

I’ve been thinking we need to figure out some sort of Horde meetup with TNC when he’s in town, but since I can’t access Disqus (or even gmail consistently) from work, I can’t figure out a clever way to coordinate. And of course I’m not on Facebook.

How about a Boston area horde meetup period!
DC Horde has ’em quarterly. They don’t even really announce them anymore. What do they have that we don’t – other than Kate Cox and anibundel, of course.

Oh here it is. Dratted thingy! I was tapping and pinching and punching my iPad looking for the reply button. I forgot where it was!

Interview was more like a probing conversation. I was really glad I decided to come out in the rain. They were filming, with a full rig, so there may be a podcast out there in MIT land if you want to see it. I ws lucky, I was almost 45 minutes early, by accident. I didn’t realize so many were turned away. Now I have another book waiting for me when the semester is over.

  10. In today’s episode of “All My Generals:” Military suspends MacDill AFB pass of Florida socialite at center of Petraeus, Allen scandals.

    • I cannot wait to get home so I can catch up on all the latest. Maybe I should get some popcorn …

      • Chuck Todd apparently couldn’t wait and asked Obama for the latest spoilers during his presser today.

      • Dang it, I forgot the popcorn. I have a cold so I stopped to get cold medicine and tissues on the way home and was so annoyed about getting carded for the cold medicine that I forgot everything else.

    • Well there goes her trips to the Commissary for tax-free goods…

My state’s fantastic recent efforts to become the next Florida where vote counting is concerned are bearing fruit: still no resolution of the race for Gabby Giffords’s old seat. The two candidates keep trading the lead, tons of provisional ballots are uncounted and in limbo, and the inevitable waves of lawsuits to influence the result are beginning.

    Thanks, Arizona Legislature!

    • And the political will to get electoral reform passed remains below that of passing legislation to ban foreign-made automatic weapons from schools.

The roofers have finally come to our house. How did we know they were here? We heard tromp, tromp, tromp on the roof at 6:20 this morning. That’s how we knew. That, and the sound of nails being ripped out of the boards. It makes a squeal that rival fingernails on chalkboard, but it sounds like the roofing nails are squealing in pain.
