The I-give-in open thread.

I even had an awesome comment for that first thread at Ta-Nehisi’s place today! But no. “Comments for this thread are now closed.” If ever there was a sign that he’s not at his desk, I’d say that’s it. So here’s a thread, both up and open.

Standard FYI clause: I generally wait about 2 hours after Ta-Nehisi would typically open a thread (roughly noon, EST, back when such a thing was typical…!), and if none is forthcoming, I put one up here.

  1. Don’t forget to go to the front page to hear the President of these United States say “Rape is rape. It is a crime…. The second thing this underscores, though, is this is exactly why you don’t want a bunch of politicians, mostly male, making decisions about women’s health care decisions.”

Some of those Runway people sound too drama llama for me. It’s better to read your recaps as it’s much less likely to result in me causing harm to my electronic equipment.

Working at home. Making hot chocolate. Cats are curled up together on the bed. I really, really want to join them.

Went to hear Tom Wolfe speak at the Free Library of Philadelphia last night. He was, as always, resplendent in a white suit. He said his big influences are Balzac, Zola, and Epictetus, the Stoic philosopher.

He could be at his desk but simply unwilling to deal with the shitstorm that the post (for that matter, any post that’s even remotely about abortion) is likely to engender.

    • Also true… can’t imagine why that might be.

    • But what’s really weird is that I posted the exact same thing that Roac did (weather permitting) and so did Wiredog, but our comments were deleted while the other storm comments are up. Someone’s home and not making sense.

It is so cold in the office today! I don’t know who thought floor-to-ceiling windows were a great idea for this building, but they should have to sit here in a bathing suit with the wind pouring in.

Why are you wearing a bathing suit, in Canada, in late October?

So, do I walk over and early vote (about 8/10 mile from here) this afternoon, or do my husband and I take a nice romantic drive to the early voting spot tomorrow?

    • Early voting starts here tomorrow. I’m going tomorrow. Before Sandy gets here.

I prefer Hurricanoreaster. Partly because the “cano” in the middle could be ambiguous about whether it’s an even greater disaster than just a meteorological one.

    • Vote early if you’re on the Atlantic Coast. If Sandy hits hard there can be power outages lasting well into November.

  8. Dear Barnes & Noble: it wouldn’t kill you to make a good, must-have book available for Free Fridays. You know, something by Pratchett or Iain M. Banks…

I can’t go in there. I tried and just ended up watching the fake Obama birth tape.

I was wondering if it would get the same kind of microscopic examination for anachronisms as the “Alien Autopsy” film the other year did. But it sounds like it is just too ridiculous to be worth bothering with.

(A bunch of people turned up with all sorts of anachronisms in that film, things like the particular type of coiled phone cord shown wasn’t made until years after the alledged date.)

Plus they used the wrong font with computer-generated kerning….
Wonder how may really honest conservatives are trying to get someone fired over this

A smart conservative would just say that it must have been made by a liberal to mock/smear conservatives.

            It’s really, really bad.

    • Thanks – I left a different comment, but in a way, it’s all different pockets in the same coat.

I am a subscriber to the Atlantic, or should that be The Atlantic? Anyway I am a subscriber. I used to be a subscriber in the 80s, but lapsed until I started hanging out at TNCs. Remember TNCs? Its where the Open Threads used to be.
Well anyway, once I subscribed, they had my email address and postal address. So they started sending me emails asking me as a former subscriber to subscribe again. They even offered me a better deal than the one I currently am on, but I have no use for two copies of the Atlantic, or of The Atlantic.

So I mostly deleted these monthly emails until I hit reply this time and told them that I was a current subscriber. I didn’t expect any response because these things are usually automated semi-spam addresses, but to my surprise I got a message back saying they were looking into the situation. Three days later, another email was received that said that they had confirmed I was a subscriber. From the fact that the mag was coming every month I pretty much had that worked out.

I expect another email next month asking me as a former subscriber to return.

According to Chicago (the Chicago Manual of Style, that is, not the city or the Obama campaign), it’s the Atlantic. Or even more correctly, the Atlantic.

Until they stop sending me stupid emails about subscribing when I already subscribe, they get no italics out of me.

    • Well, hooray for a human being at the email helm?

I just experienced my first direct benefit of the Affordable Care Act: my prescription for oral contraceptives was completely covered by my insurance. Woot!

I will experience my second direct benefit – a huge one – in a couple of months when my COBRA runs out. With a pre-existing condition, I will be able to get health insurance.

    Yay for Obamacare!

John Scalzi writes a thank you letter from a “Just Another Rapist” to certain conservative politicians:

“WARNING: this post is going to be oh-so-very-triggery for victims of rape and sexual assault. I am not kidding.”

And could the smaller storms be scheduled to fall on regular predictable intervals?
      That would be better.

  14. The one thing ticking me off about the final weeks of the campaign. Obama keeps sending notices of “hey get a ticket for my next stop in Florida” but then the ticket release places are so far out of the way that I’ve got no chance to get a ticket and show up for the event. 😦 Dammit, Barack, when you stopping off at Palm Harbor/Tarpon Springs/New Port Richey?!
