Gone costume shoppin’ – but here’s an open thread!

The boy had a half-day of school today, so we’re off to the resale shops in search of costume components. Let’s see: We’ll need suspenders, a maroon bow-tie, a tweed jacket… and a fez.

Standard FYI clause: I generally wait about 2 hours after Ta-Nehisi would typically open a thread (roughly noon, EST, back when such a thing was typical…!), and if none is forthcoming, I put one up here.

I’m having one of those days when it will be a win if I don’t fall asleep at my desk. I finished the last big thing yesterday, and don’t really feel like starting the next big project yet. Also, whatever virus it was that had me so sick two weeks ago is having a minor resurgence. Not enough to really cause me much in the way of symptoms, but enough that I’m a bit fatigued and I can feel that my immune system is fighting something.

Peppermint tea can help, if you have any handy. More palatable to your coworkers than the pickle juice I might otherwise recommend.

I have some peppermint tea at home, but the last time I had any, it was such a pick-me-up that I started having heart palpatations.

I think all of this is not helped by by use of feeling less than 100% as an excuse to eat a bunch of sugary/starchy crap and ending up on a blood sugar roller coaster. I notice the sleepiness most right after I eat.

Palpatations? Wow, that’s not a response I would have expected your body to have! I mean, there’s no caffeine in it – or there shouldn’t be. Maybe you’d need to put in some chamomile with it (I hate chamomile on its own, but mixed with mint it’s alright).

Is it herbal peppermint tea? Because that shouldn’t have any caffeine, and if it gives you palpitations that is … weird!

I stockpile peppermint herbal tea like the end of the world is coming. It’s the only thing that helps my breathing if I have a cold or if my asthma is acting up. That and apple cider vinegar are wonder “drugs” for my particular variety of breathing problems.

I’m not sure it’s necessarily the right word, but I was stimulated to the point where it was unpleasant. I think I’m just very sensitive to that kind of stuff.

    • So glad I got to have a half day today. Of course, I’m stuck at home waiting for a furniture delivery, but at least I have a Purrbot by my side.

I’m leaving at 4:00, since the original plan for the weekend was for the boy to get here in time for us to go to a 6:15 showing of “Looper”, so I stayed late a couple afternoons earlier in the week. (Then he got called in for OT this afternoon, tomorrow, and Sunday, so now he won’t make it up at all, which I’m sure isn’t helping my overall well-being just from a mood perspective.)

I also feel like I’m relapsing from a cold/flu I’ve had for a couple of weeks. It is not being helped by the pounding bass coming out of the VP’s office near my cube…his door is closed, but my desk is literally vibrating.

Ugh. Yeah, I think my unkillable throat infection may be coming back again. (Second time in a month, third time in three months.) Which is a problem, because I have a date this weekend. I’m taking all the vitamins and drinking all the liquids to try to stave it off.

I can’t help but notice that both occurrences of mine began two days after a visit from the boy. I’m kind of wondering if he’s a carrier but not actually sick with it.

  6. Well, the inevitable has happened. My mother’s 16 year old half-dead Nissan has had an Obama sticker on it for almost 5 years. Sometime between Wednesday morning and this morning, someone tried to scrape it off her car, getting some but not all of it. However, and I’m presuming the same person, bent and twisted her radio antenna in an attempt to break it off the car. It’ll probably cost way too much to bother replacing it.

Real classy, people, real classy. I can only hope it happened while she was out Wednesday, as she was home all day yesterday and I sure hope it wasn’t a neighbor.

It was so brave of that person to pull that kind of crap.😦 We don’t bumper sticker our car for that very reason.

      • That’s why I haven’t put a sticker on my car. I believe in him and voting for him, but I also believe I have 5 car payments left and I’d like Dr Blue (yes, the car has a name) to survive to be paid off.

        • Relax. It’s okay to name your car. I did. My mom named her station wagon. Hell, we name boats and airplanes…

          • My van (RIP) was the Green Monster. It was big and green.

My first car was a 1957 Oldsmobile station wagon named Archimedes. Great car. The radio had a search function (something I didn’t see again until last 15-20 years), that had two switches to activate it–one up on the radio where you’d expect it to be, and the other down on the floorboard next to the headlight dimmer switch. For all you young’uns, until the 70s or so, you turned your headlights’ brights on and off with a foot switch down there to the left of the clutch. Anyway, the fun thing about that was that we’d be driving around…ummm…OK, stoned, and I’d snap my fingers at the radio while hitting that foot switch to change the station, thus freaking everyone right the hell out. Folks would be snapping their fingers at my radio trying to change the station, with me saying, “no that’s not quite it it, try again” and such. Zam, good clean fun.

    • Get a replacement bumper sticker: “Next Time You Vandalize A Car, Man Up And Leave Your Name.”

In 2008 one of our neighbors ran over our Obama sign. I replaced it and stuck a cinder block under it. So they stole it. So I put out another. So they stole it. So I put out another. So they gave up. I had a bunch of sneaky revenge plots, but in the end it was more satisfying just making them give up. And also winning.

dumb things that amuse me: animals with the same word for genus and species. For instance:

    Bison bison
    Iguana iguana
    Gallus gallus
    Gorilla gorilla

I have no idea why the last one especially amuses me, but hey, cheap nerd humor.

It also makes me laugh that the genus and species for boa constrictor is…..Boa constrictor.

We purposely buy trick-or-treat candy that we don’t like.
        Stuff like Skittles and Gummies.
If we buy almost anything chocolate or nutty, and the kid traffic is light (as it usually is) well then that candy is GONE.

  12. Ok. The bathroom is really done now. Once the paint is dry and the rods go back up, I’ll be able to put up all the bed bath and beyond junk I bought this afternoon.
Also, my new coffee table arrived! I sent a pic to Rob. he then facebooked that there appeared to be a 2001 style monolith lying in our living room.
