It must be mine – it shall be mine!

Today is – wow. Today is just something else. Do you have time to breathe? I don’t have time to breathe. PENGUINS IT IS.

(If you turn it up and listen carefully, you’ll hear the penguin keeper explaining that “penguins are predators, and just like a cat’ll chase a laser-pointer, these guys will chase light, too.” Huh! I never thought of penguins as predators, but of course they are! One has one’s assumptions up-ended every gosh darn day, doesn’t one).

Penguins are excellent predators and are very well shaped for their hunting environment. They’re like little bullets in the water. They’re my favorite example of convergent evolution. The adaptions that penguins made to hunting in the water are pretty much the same adaptations dolphins and icthyosaurs made. We know they’re not related because they are a bird, mammal and reptile, respectively. Despite this, hunting in the ocean produced the same adaptations. They have similar shapes to the body and the head and the flippers and the beak. The environment acted to produce the most effective shape. Evolution. It works.
