My President is a feminist II – President Obama addresses Planned Parenthood supporters.

“Let’s be clear here: Women are not an interest group…. They’re half of this country.”

“If you truly values families, you shouldn’t play politics with a woman’s health.”

(Do you think the President saw my tweet?)

  1. It has been a long time coming, and I’m glad he’s finally speaking up publicly. This video was kind of weird. It’s a message to Planned Parenthood’s supporters, but it sounds like it’s to the people on the fence. Also, women are also orphans, only children, single, and childfree. Good work, Obama, now refine and repeat, and actually please address abortion! (Liss has a pretty good critique on Shakesville) Anyone who is interested can send a thank you note through on the Planned Parenthood website (with the option to personalize):

    Thank you, Mr President!

I am sick to death of all the rhetoric around family values when it’s very clear that the well-being of mothers and children are clearly less important than the ability of corporations to make money and the ability of specific religious institutions to impose their beliefs on the rest of us. If we really valued families, there would be universal health care for everybody under 18; maternity care would be covered under every insurance policy; women wouldn’t have to fight for the right to control their own fertility; and we would recognize that families come in all different forms.

Amen. I would add deeply subsidized day care to the list, and an education budget on par with military spending.

And parental leave policies that realize that it’s inhumane to separate a six-week-old infant and her mother for 9-10 hours at a stretch every day and that fathers need to be present in their babies’ lives…..I’ve really got quite a list.

  6. The one thing — if it can be boiled down to one thing — that will ensure President Obama’s re-election in November, is his humanity. To this man, his work is for all Americans, and he is doing his utmost to balance the needs of a nation with the needs of the individuals that make up that nation. He gets that; none of the Republican candidates do. They are all about individuality over unity, individual freedom over the needs of everyone, where it suits them. None of these GOP shills are interested in the concerns of an average American citizen, only with maintaining the grip of their party on power and padding their personal power.

It is President Obama’s commitment to America as a whole, that makes him my President.

    • Me, too, Newt, me too. Disagreements and frustrations aside, there’s that rock-bottom sense of decency and humanity, and I’m very, very grateful for it.

    • Outstanding nefarious, outstanding. I agree with you 1000%! The GOP’s position on, well, just about everything drives me nuts and it’s always refreshing to read comments from others who also ‘get it’.
