Good Stuff: Fridays with Billy.

I started a new feature last week: Fridays with Billy — the Billy in question being Billy Bragg, punk-folk-socialist-singer-songwriter extraordinaire. Click here for the long answer on why. Short answer? ‘Cause I love him.

Last week I mentioned and quoted two of my favorite Bragg songs, and then posted a different one entirely. This has bugged me all week long, and so this week, I’mma post the songs I quoted last week. Right then? Right. (You’ll find a link to the lyrics just below each clip).

First: “It Says Here,” a song which is shockingly reflective of the economic reality of right here, right now. I’m posting this particular version because of the sheer surrealism of a single electric guitar and words of revolution on the set of a pastel-hued 1980s morning news show (not to mention the clear befuddlement of the woman introducing him).

Second: “Brickbat,” a song which makes me cry for love of my beloved from the very first chord struck.

PS I’m hoping to put up another post later today, especially given the paucity of posts this week, but no promises. One will try one’s very best!

    What We Need Is Here

    Geese appear high over us,
pass, and the sky closes. Abandon,
as in love or sleep, holds
    them to their way, clear
in the ancient faith: what we need
is here. And we pray, not
for new earth or heaven, but to be
quiet in heart, and in eye,
clear. What we need is here.

    -Wendell Berry
