For those who have threads to tie up on this, the oldest/newest day of the year!
Standard FYI clause: I generally wait about 2 hours after Ta-Nehisi would typically open a thread (roughly noon, EST, back when such a thing was typical…!), and if none is forthcoming, I put one up here.

/ December 31, 2012So… flogging, I guess?
Most recent post was a review of Cruzan’s “Single Barrel” rum (the scare quotes are there because it’s not a single barrel spirit in the usual sense). A very easy sipper and a good first choice if you’re trying to get into rum.

It’s been a while, so there’s lots more. Another Improved Whiskey Cocktail, with St. Germain and Chartreuse. Depaz rhum agricole. The “All About the Barrel” rum class I went to a few weekends back. And Hazelburn 8 YO, one of my favorite triple distilled whiskies.

/ December 31, 2012What are you and the kids up to this evening, E? Do you have something you usually do on NYE?

/ December 31, 2012We have a semi-new usual thing: We go out to dinner, and then to a late night musical. This year it’s Singin’ in the Rain (last year it was Sound of Music, with Nazis in the aisles, and I got the fucking fright of my life, I tell you what! I’m crossing my fingers that there will be no Nazis in 1920s Hollywood).
What are you Canuckians doing?
caoil
/ December 31, 2012That would be rather freaky! You probably only need to watch out for umbrellas this time, I suspect.
We had an invitation to a party, but it’s all the way in Burnaby (30-45 minute drive, depending on weather/traffic). I said maybe, but I don’t think we’ll go. We’re getting a rain/snow mix today, and if it cools down and freezes tonight that’ll mean black ice. I don’t like being out with NYE drivers (drunk or not, they speed too much and drive too aggressively). I don’t like leaving the cats alone, as there’ll probably be some jackass setting off firecrackers in the neighbourhood.
At this point in the day I’m not entirely sure I’ll make it to midnight. All I’ve done so far is vacuum, but I am exhausted!

/ December 31, 2012I’ll have blogflogging tomorrow (thanks to the magic of scheduled posting). Right now, though, I need to go cook some stuff to take to a party tonight. Happy New Year, everyone!

/ December 31, 2012I still can’t get Twitter to work on my Firefox! I’d rather not go back to IE, and I’m not too sure if Chrome is good to use…
Nora Munro
/ December 31, 2012I’ve never had trouble using Twitter in Chrome. Or had any other problems with Chrome, for that matter.

/ December 31, 2012Happy New Year’s Eve to The Horde, and to TNC his ownself.
It’s our 26th wedding anniversary, and we plan to celebrate it the way we always do…. takeout Chinese, a fire in the fireplace, glass of wine, movie on the bigscreen TV. Don’t go outside….. Everyone in the house except me will be asleep before midnight. I will watch the ball drop, and I’ll be asleep by 12:15.
Tomorrow – Les Miz!

/ December 31, 2012That sounds lovely! And as someone who’s closing in on 20 years together (17 married), I raise my glass to your 26. Yay for happy marriages!

/ December 31, 2012Happy New Year, all!
My plan for tonight is a quiet night in, bidding 2012 a good riddance. I’m hoping 2013 brings good jobs to all of us unemployed/partially employed (esp you, Paul Wartenberg) amongst the Horde et al, and much health and happiness to everybody.

/ December 31, 2012ANNOUNCEMENT ANNOUNCEMENT ANNOUNCEMENT!
Folks often ask me for book recommendations re: Israel and honest to blog, people, if you only ever read one book, this is the one: The Unmaking of Israel by Gershom Gorenberg (who, if you click through/scroll up, you’ll see looks like an actual-factual prophet):

/ December 31, 2012Heh. Once you get a little older (or a lot older, maybe) New Year’s doesn’t matter so much. Or maybe its got something to do with being married 35 years. Anyway, mrs efgoldman will be off bluegrassing tonight, with the Bluegrass Dustfarters (they’ve all know each other from between 35 and 50 years). I’ll probably watch the football game with my eyes closed.
emilylhauser
/ December 31, 2012The Bluegrass Dustfarters might be the best name ever given to anything, ever.
efgoldman
/ December 31, 2012Oh, they call themselves Rocky Run, or Stony Road, Or Gravel, or something generically bluegrassy and boring. Alas, my powers of persuasion failed me. But if i ever get the chance to introduce them on stage (which i have done quite a lot over the years – concert hosting), well…

/ December 31, 2012Just woke up from joining my kittens in their mid day nap, to see McCain on TV doing his regularly scheduled reminder we should all be really grateful he never became President.
The big news is PBS is working to et Downton airings sync’d up. Everything else is just fun over at my place. Tomorrow there will be New Years Day songs.

/ December 31, 2012Blog flog: year-end promotion of the funny captions I make at the Cheezburger site. I am still emotionally upset that they killed off the Pundit Kitchen wing of the franchise…

/ December 31, 2012UPDATE: The clot is in between Sec Clinton’s brain and her skull. But they’re saying no stroke, and she’ll make a full recovery.
We can all breathe a little easier, and go back to speculating about 2016 now.

/ December 31, 2012We heart you too Emily!
I am full of good food, and we’re watching some weird disc of the 2000 New Years fireworks around the world as we digest before heading up to see Louis CK in Baltimore.
Weird to see the bad 90s fashions on CNN, and that this was 18months before 9/11…

/ December 31, 201298 minutes to midnight CST. We had cherry barbecue pork for dinner, with baked beans, and carrot cake for dessert. New Castle Brown Ale is tonight’s festive alcohol. I’m only going to make it through one bottle. We’re spending the evening in, which is our best way to spend NYE. Safe and Happy NYE to everyone!
