It’s yours….

Standard FYI clause: I generally wait about 2 hours after Ta-Nehisi would typically open a thread (roughly noon, EST, back when such a thing was typical…!), and if none is forthcoming, I put one up here.

The side effect of General Schwarzkopf passing is me realizing the the Gulf War was over TWENTY YEARS AGO.

    Where did they go?

How can the entire Earth be under “terrorist attack”? Seems like a scale terminology error to me.

Yesterday in the Open Thread at Now, over at Ani’s I posted my concern about my mother who was flying into the great eastern storm. Last night she made it as far as Toronto, the Centre of the Universe and there she was stuck. She flew out this morning and reached my brother’s in Montreal, sans luggage but it will arrive sometime we hope.

My mother has a cell phone, (mostly at my insistence, because you know, I worry) and it is carried as a second phone on my plan. I called her last night, the phone was turned off! Because she turned it off after calling my brother, because if she called me it would cost me long distance! (Thankfully she doesn’t know about roaming) Mothers worry, but so do kids, leave the phone on!

Yay for your mom making it safely! Some of my siblings and I were driving back from Toronto when the storm hit. It was NOT fun. Blowing snow, slippery roads, etc. Once we got off the QEW toward the Lewiston Bridge, the highway wasn’t even plowed. So I’m glad your mom got out of YYZ. :)

My brother and I went out at midnight Wed night to shovel my parents’ driveway and they already had more than a foot of snow. It was quite pretty but I’m glad I didn’t have 16 inches worth to shovel out when I arrived back in MA last night.

  5. I have a spare little girl in my house right now, one who was dropped off for a sleep-over last night and was to be picked up “at 10 or 11.”

    It is now 1:14.

As her mother has not always been what I would consider the single most responsible person on earth, I’m still chalking this up to taking a deep sleep after her night shift at the hospital without her phone by her side, but very shortly I’m going to start worrying. And I don’t want to get too visibly mad at her, because I don’t want embarrassment or shame to stand between us and this little girl continuing to come over.

My phone has a very annoying habit of turning the ringer off just bumping up against stuff in my pocket.

When I replace it someday, a big requirement will be “Nothing can be changed while phone is closed except silencing the ring of a current phone call”. Assuming they make ones like that.

          Umm…
Do they still make phones that close? We expect our next phones will be “smart”by default.

My phone takes bazillions of pictures of the inside of my pocket. I guess I should just be glad it doesn’t randomly send them to people.

Mostly the pics are just solid blackness, but once I got a beige haze. It’s never actually caught any coins or keys or anything interesting like that.

On most phones you can configure what the buttons do. Mine used to have the side button take pictures, but that really ticked me off, so I made it do something else instead – I don’t remember what, even. Probably something that requires the phone be on and unlocked, so that it can’t happen by accident!

I should really suggest this to my mom, who pocket-dials me about once a month.

Weather complaint. It was minus 20 when I went out early this morning, sun came out, it is now the afternoon and minus 25. This is not acceptable; although better than last weeks weather.

  7. Yesterday in the OTAN, I declared my intention to sew a winter coat. When I got home, I went to dig out the fabric I knew I had, and discovered that at some point, I’d actually cut out a coat, lining and all. I can’t decide if I feel like a genius or an idiot.

How you know your HR Department is dumber than they should be: they misspell an employee’s name though that person has been here over two years, and despite it being spelled correctly on the internal phone list which one could always check if one wasn’t entirely sure.

When I worked for a large organization, HR was not where they put the sharpest knives. They stashed the allies of various managers there so they could screw up the lives of the non-favoured.

It makes me glad I never went down that career path as I’d have a hard time dealing with that sort of scenario on a daily basis.

When I talk to customers, i ask them (politely) to get off the speaker. “Sorry, I’m having trouble understanding you” usually works.
Except on certain New York types. You know who they are.

Time to give up ‘the ghost’ of my rather old laptop and start looking for one that works reliably. PC and not Mac. But other than that, what sort of specs (processor/RAM/video card/etc) should I be looking at for longest potential lifespan and for good/fast operational activity. I don’t do fancy stuff w/ the computer, just the usual stuff.

Good time to buy. If I wasn’t addicted to macs, I’d check out the Chromebooks, and the Surface. If you code, you probably need more power than that; there’s a sale at Staples RIGHT now, but no idea what they’re offering.

3)My mom’s husband is selling his guns as of now. I went to drop off the kitty before my Christmas trip, and there were four rifles cleared, cleaned and ready on the spare room bed. And I thought he only had one! It was weird, but a relief to know they’ll be gone. Bizarre when the cat jumped up on the bed amongst them. Sadly, was not fast enough to get a picture! Oddness.

I am about to deploy the brownie mix. Because I can. And because my new glasses are not yet in at the optometrist’s office. (I knew they would take awhile, but there is the fact that I’m getting progressive lenses, new frames, and an exam for $200.00, I shall try to be patient. It has been nearly two weeks, which is testing my patience, but I do have to allow for doing this so close to the holidays and their various incarnations.)
