Standard FYI clause: I generally wait about 2 hours after Ta-Nehisi would typically open a thread (roughly noon, EST, back when such a thing was typical…!), and if none is forthcoming, I put one up here.

efgoldman
/ December 6, 2012And…
how can I be here all by my onesies? This is scary.
Kate Cox (@KCoxDC)
/ December 6, 2012I’m here! I just have nothing better to do at the moment than complain that all clothes should be self-laundering.
Craig (@FuriousGiorge)
/ December 6, 2012I don’t want to interrupt your Daddy-Daughter Day festivities. Besides, there’s a bunch of Star Trek nerds that need given a little bit of what-for.

/ December 6, 2012I’m gonna’ hit you with my onion.
mrs efgoldman was submitting story ideas to Gene Rodenberry before you were born, sonny!
Remember “Tribbles”?

/ December 6, 2012You’re married to David Gerrold? The things we learn.

/ December 6, 2012I’m still sayin’ that the Mitchell argument seems to be the strongest one.
Craig (@FuriousGiorge)
/ December 6, 2012Who the fuck is that? No one, that’s who. They should just make him Frank Poole, if they want to go with a Gary Lockwood science fiction character who may or may not want revenge against the entity that destroyed his life.
aaron singer
/ December 6, 2012Just looked up that character and apparently he survives and is revived in 3001? WTF.
efgoldman
/ December 6, 2012When I’m win-the-lottery rich I’m going to have new clothes delivered every week, and have a lackey to wash the once-worn ones and take them to Goodwill.
Nora Munro
/ December 6, 2012I’m here, though I shouldn’t be, because work.
Also I’m bummed because (1) they upgraded my computer to Windows 7 / IE 9 but I still can’t get past Disqus on the Atlantic’s main site and (2) I’m not going to be able to take extra time off at Christmas because work. Neither of those are world-ending problems so I feel silly being bummed but I’m bummed anyway.
caoil
/ December 6, 2012I think you’re okay to be bummed by those things. Let us commiserate! I suspect I will have the same problems w/r/t the eventual upgrade to my pc. And then, the firm is “closing” on Christmas Eve and NYE, so that means all of the assistants will be gone, but my department can’t necessarily be closed because OMG what if one of the lawyers needed something urgent panic freakout? So I can’t even make plans for anything, because I know for a fact HR isn’t going to set us free until probably the Friday before.
Nora Munro
/ December 6, 2012I love urgent panic freakout at work. It’s the best.
My work problem is to do with two completely irrational artificial deadlines for things that are unlikely to ever actually go anywhere. I’ll get Christmas Day and NYD, but I was hoping to get to use a little of the vast quantity of leave I have stowed up.
The thing about Disqus at the Atlantic is that it’s still giving me that “sorry, try a modern browser like IE9″ message even though I have fanarking IE9.
caoil
/ December 6, 2012I wish I understood what it is about the Atlantic’s setup that causes so much trouble. Disqus behaves itself at so many other sites!
Nora Munro
/ December 6, 2012Including the Atlantic Wire and Cities sites! It’s just the stupid main site that won’t let me in.
Captain_Button
/ December 6, 2012You may have IE9, but is it the “right sort” of IE9 ifyouknowwhatimean?
8->}
Nora Munro
/ December 6, 2012Apparently not.
(Not the right sort, that is
).
Kate Cox (@KCoxDC)
/ December 6, 2012The “right sort” of IE is spelled “f-i-r-e-f-o-x” or “c-h-r-o-m-e.”

/ December 6, 2012As a guardian of the public trust I am clearly not responsible enough choose my own browser.

/ December 6, 2012I need to get a knife and shoot myself. Spent all week getting this to work and now the webserver doesn’t like it.

watson42
/ December 6, 2012“get a knife and shoot myself”? That seems either contradictory or overkill. Times like these, my temptation is to take a sledgehammer to the server, but that’s just me.
Captain_Button
/ December 6, 2012A good idea, but the server is 800 miles away. But it looks like the problem is that I had the balls on the wrong side. Fixed now.

/ December 6, 2012Made the mistake of wearing a still-damp* pair of shoes to work today, and now I’m going to have to go out at lunch to get new socks, and probably a new pair of shoes.
caoil
/ December 6, 2012*in my defense, they got waterlogged nearly a month ago, and have had ample time/heat to dry out by now. I think I need to stop buying Born shoes because they do not handle any amount of water well.
Captain_Button
/ December 6, 2012I am finding I need to take off my shoes for a while in the afternoon to let the sweat dry a bit. Don’t know how badly this is gassing my coworkers.
Gonzai55
/ December 6, 2012A couple of musical thoughts, Dave Brubeck division:
1. Something I just learned – when ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ was in production, they wanted Brubeck to score it. Brubeck was touring at the time and declined, but suggested they talk to this guy he knew, Vince Guaraldi. And thus history was made…
2. ‘Take Five’ has been stuck in my head for 24 hours now. This morning, I happened to hear Dan Deacon’s ‘True Thrush’. Now it is also stuck in my head, mostly at the same time as Take Five. The crazy thing is – it works. Somebody should mix them.

/ December 6, 2012Today it’s more work stuff than family stuff, actually. [Mostly of the "failure to plan on your part should not constitute an emergency on my part, but it does because you sign my paychecks" variety.] I just keep reminding myself that my week is over in 24 hours, and then I’m off to the airport wine bar.
Captain_Button

/ December 6, 2012Fallows is going to be at one of the local bookstores this evening and I don’t think I can go. Damn. I’ve been so bloody overextended these past couple of months, it’s no wonder my immune system is hell right now.
I also have had Brubeck on constant repeat in my head the last 24+ hours. I keep wondering if I should dislodge it, but I like it.

/ December 6, 2012I’ve noticed that there is an almost 1:1 correlation for me between being stressed and being sick. Provides a strong motivation to keep calm.
watson42
/ December 6, 2012There was an insane amount of pointless family drama at the end of Thanksgiving, which on top of being seriously overextended/overcommitted pushed me right over the edge wrt staying healthy. On top of the fact I’m still looking for a permanent job, and my COBRA runs out in a few weeks, and I’m behind on a bunch of projects, and…. I need to get back on a regular workout schedule. That more than anything helps keep me on an even keel. Having only 24 hours in a day is seriously limiting.
