If I could tell the world one thing…

… it would be this Erik H. Erikson quote (which I may be paraphrasing, as I’m going from memory):

It doesn’t matter if a thing is real. If it is perceived of as being real, it will be real in its consequences.

Then, if I could tell the world one more thing, I’d probably quote this newspaper headline:

Be gracious or please just shhhh.

I might throw in Dr. King’s words:

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction … The chain reaction of evil–hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars — must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation.

But if I could only tell the world one thing, it would be the first one. Because if we could take that on, and remember it as we move through our days, we’d be half-way there, wouldn’t we?

UPDATE: Oh wait! Within seconds of posting this, I found the following:

“There’s only one rule that I know of, babies—God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.” – Kurt Vonnegut

That’s probably the best one of all, ever. So I’m going with that one, now.

Fusion quote: It doesn’t matter if Emily Lynn Hauser is “fundamentally” good and kind. She strives to be good and kind, and is thus good and kind in her consequences.

Happy day of rest, and best of grace with the bar mitzvah preparations.

  2. My friend and teacher R’ Sami Barth has the following quote as his .sig file at the end of his email messages:

” … When I was young I admired clever people; now that I am older I admire kind people.” — Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel

    I think of it often.

    Days the weather sits
    in the endless sky,
    the clouds drifting by

    The winter’s snow,
    summer’s heat,
    same street.

    Nothing changes
    but the faces, the people,
    all the things they do

    ‘spite of heaven and hell
    or city hall—
    Nothing’s wiser than a moment.

    No one’s chance
    is simply changed by wishing,
    right or wrong.

What you do is how you get along.
What you did is all it ever means.

“Place to Be” by Robert Creeley
